Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Constipation With Bleeding In Infant After Starting Whole Milk?
I STARTED MY DAUGHTER ON WHOLE MILK SHE WILL BE 10 MONTHS 0N THE 26TH BEEN ON FORMULA FOR 9 MONTHS 3 WEEKS I HAD NOTHING BUT CONSTIPATION WITH BLEEDING AND SHE WOULD PASS A STOOL ONCE A WEEK AND WOULD CRY ALL NIGHT IN HER SLEEP WITH PAIN . SHE DRINKS 2 )8 OZ BOTTLES AT NIGHT SHE SLEEPS 12 HOURS IS ALL OF THIS NORMAL ? AND NOW THAT SHE IS ON REGULAR MILK WITH POLYVISOL IRON DROPPER I PUT IN IN ONCE A DAY SHE GOES TO THE BATHROOM EVERYDAY.
Whole milk is known to cause constipation in infants. The bleeding can be due to fissure in ano or fecoliths impacted in colon. This is difficult to treat as most of the stool softeners and laxatives are not allowed before 2 years of age. It is a great news that now your child is on regular milk added with Polyvisol Iron and now she is passing stool normally. You have to observe the stools daily and also send stool for lab tests if there is any alteration for routine as well as for reducing sugars, to see for any allergy o any certain food or beverage. She may have problems in future. If she is passing stools normally at the moment then nothing to worry at the moment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
