What Causes Cough While On Lisinopril In A Diabetic Patient?

Is Lisinopril 10mg or Cozaar 50mg used for treatment of protein in the blood? My husband has had diabetes for over 30 years and was given Lisinopril but developed a cough and has now been switched to Cozaar. He does not have high blood pressure and never has.

Hello,

I understand your concern. Lisinopril belongs to a class of drugs that causes dry cough as a side effect. Cozaar, while similar in action to Lisinopril, it does not have this side effect. Both Cozaar and Lisinopril keep blood vessels from narrowing, thus causing hypertension and organ damage and this is the reason they may be used as profilaxy to prevent kidney damage in diabetic patients. These medications are usually prescribed to patients who already have high blood pressure, but they may also be given as prevention.
