What Causes Cough While Speaking?

Hi. Three weeks ago I got a bronchial bug in Mexico. I am still coughing, and a concerning symptom that was showing up even before the bug is that while speaking it s like I get caught on words and am unable to get the word out without coughing - almost like my voice/larynx has become weakened somehow. Is this something that I should go into our local clinic for, or just ride it out? I am a 62-year-old female in good health. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You may be having problem with larynx. Possible causes are like laryngitis or vocal nodule or acid reflux or edema or thickening of vocal cords etc.

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.

Avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks.

Use tablet Pantoprazole.

Use water vapor inhalation and salt water gargling thrice a day for five days.

Please consult your ENT specialist he will do indirect laryngoscopy and treat you accordingly.

Take care.
