Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Unfortunately, being pregnant does not mean your wife cannot get sick like a normal person. The symptoms of coughing, body aches and pain may be consistent with the flu.
Influenza can more easily turn into
pneumonia for a pregnant woman because from her large belly it can be harder to breathe. In addition, lower
back pain can be a symptom of a
kidney infection, which if untreated, can cause bacteria to spread to the blood and cause fluid in the lungs, which can be very dangerous. Also I do not know what country you are from, but there are other medical diseases that your wife may have contracted that could be dangerous for her as well.
If your wife is struggling to breathe, as you say I very strongly recommend you bring her to the hospital immediately for evaluation. Whether she has the flu, or pneumonia, or another cause of
labored breathing, if she cannot breathe she is very unsafe. The baby is not affected by these conditions, but I have seen women die of pneumonia in
pregnancy. She needs at least an assessment of her
oxygen status, and possibly other tests such as a chest X-ray (which is safe while pregnant) blood tests and an evaluation for the baby.
So I strongly advise you to get your wife to a hospital as soon as you can so she can see a doctor for evaluation. I d not know how long it has been since you posted this question, but please get her a medical evaluation as soon as possible to make sure nothing dangerous could be going on.
I hope I was able to answer your question and sincerely hope your wife will be OK.
Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
