I started coughing yesterday while trying to get my son into the house after he had knee surgery. He fell and I tried to help him up (he is 325lbs). Then my cough began producing deep red blood. I went to the ER and they did chest and throat xrays and blood work up. All came back normal. Could I have possibly broken a blood vessel causing the bleeding. I didn t bleed last night but just now while helping him up I started coughing again with blood. What could this be?

Pathologist and Microbiologist, Dr. S. Samanta's Response
you are correct1
some small blood vessel has been injured during the coughs and that's why blood comes out!
the lesion is so small and within the lumen or the wall of the airway or food canal.
so please get this bloody secretion teasted and go for an examination by the physician; a laryngoscopy could be of help!
all the best!
