What Causes Cracking Sound In Knees While Climbing Stairs?

For the past several months, my left knee squeaks when I go up and down the stairs. I do not have any pain, but was wondering if I need to have it checked. I m in shape, attend boot camp 3-4 times a week. The squeak was there before I started boot camp. Thank you.

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hello,

As this cracking sounds are the bony friction sound which occurs due to reduced joint space. Taking an MRI is advised.

Since there is a reduced joint space I suspect it to be muscle weakness of the quadriceps and tightness of the Hamstring.

I will advise doing exercises like - static quadriceps, static hamstring, straight leg raise, and balance board training. This will help improve the strength in the muscles and also improve joint space. Doing stretching of hamstring is also advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
