I am a 60 yr lady, recently retired from teaching nursery children. I am 5 4 tall and weigh 9 stone 10 ounces.I began to get a croaky voice 4 years ago, had my throat investigated at hospital. then symptoms disappeared. There were no obvious heath problems. About a month before retirement my voice began to become croaky intermittently and has continued for the past 8 weeks of retirement. Should I be concerned? Mrs Pauline Woodacre
The noble profession of teaching can cause some problems like singer's nodules that means there is a small polyp formation on the vocal cords due to excessive stress and happens with singers, teachers and such professions that need to talk longer and/or hard. Hence it is best to get a proper diagnosis by laryngoscopy by an ENT Surgeon. If there is any lump formation, this can be treated by excision of nodules by laser with great results. Even first stage cancers are treated the same way. This will also allow to see for any other causes. Also important is to give voice the complete rest by stopping to talk. helps a lot as this can avoid surgery if this resolves by medications and rest to voice.
