What Causes Cyst In Ovary And An Enlarged Uterus?

hi my partner has been diagnosed with a 6cm intramural/sub mucosal fibroid and a cyst on a ovary and an enlarged uterus, she also had an iron deficiency and was taking ferrous sulphate, although she stopped these about 7 to 10 days ago. the diagnosis was done via ultrasound. something that is concerning me is that she always complained of upper back pains during her period. the back pains have now more or less become constant and she also has heart burn. could these additional symtoms still be a part of the endo? (she is 45 years old 5ft 2 tall and 7.5 stone in weight)

Hello,

The symptoms that she is experiencing, like back ache, heavy bleeding, pain during sex, frequency in urination are due to fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that occur due to changing level of hormones, progesterone and estrogen. These uterine tumors, have a tendency to grow in size during reproductive phase, pregnancy, when the level of these hormones are high and they naturally shrink when hormones are low, as in at menopause.

It is treated with medicines that help to shrink it like GnRH, iron supplements, pain relieving medicines. Some may prescribe BC pills to help control heavy bleeding. If the symptoms are severe & fail to be controlled by conservative treatment, then the treating doctor may recommend removal of the fibroid by surgery. Ovarian cysts commonly occur due to untreated PID, pelvic infection, hormonal imbalance, excessive secretion of androgen hormones, etc.

Some ovarian cysts go away on their own, help your partner to stay away from stress, physical / emotional and anxiety. The more she is relaxed the better. Weight loss and hormonal correction therapy with estrogen and progesterone may be helpful. However, if the cyst grows and causes pain, the treating doctor may recommend removal by surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
