What Causes Dark Black Vaginal Discharge Spotting?

Hi I m a 41-year-old female experiencing brown to dark black dry discharge, very minimal x5 days. Thought I was starting my cycle but only have a few spots on a panty liner each day and when I wipe. I have never had a consistent number of days in between each menstrual cycle. Wondering if this is premenopausal or something else.

Hello,

Brown discharge is indicative of old blood. It can occur in the premenstrual period. You may likely get your period in a few days. The dark spotting alone is not indicative of premenopause unless you persistently experience menstrual irregularities and absent/scant bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal, General & Family Physician
