I have really stubborn dark brown patches in both my feet on the outer sides of my ankles. I m from a black ethnic background, and I noticed I had these since childhood and my dad has them too. They are really embarrasing to look at. I was advised to try applying betnovate cream onto it to help lighten it. I m currently applying it as I m desperate! Is this going to lighten the dark brown patches? If not, what would you recommend I use on it instead?
This could be racial Or it could be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from repeated friction from a particular foot wear. This type of pigmentation at pressure points or sites of chronic friction is also common in those who have Vit B12 deficiency, known as Addisonian hyperpigmentation. The cream that you intent to use contains a moderately potent topical steroid i.e betamethasone valerate. Topical steroids inhibit melanin and thus help lighten dark patches. You may use this cream for 2-3 weeks and then follow up with your doctor for further advice regarding management. A blood test for Vit B 12 levels would help and if levels are found deficient adding a B 12 supplement may also help lighten these patches.
