What Causes Dark Colored Loose Stools With Foul Odor?

my son just had a bowl movement that was dark in colour very loose and gritty looking. it was THE most foul smelling I have come across and he is my second child.. it also had about a child fist size ball of mucus in the middle of his diaper. it appeared clear in colour. what would cause this?
