What Causes Deep Dry Cough With Pain?

I have had a dry cough that is very often deep and sometimes hurts a bit. It has been occurring for 2 years. I have had a nissen fundiplication for GERD that helped bring my voice back, but the cough contnues. I have been to an allergist. No allergies except slightly for dust. ENT and primary care have given me 2 chest x-rays in the last 2 years. Nothing. 2 weeks ago I had surgery for a spigelian hernia believed to have been caused by the cough and constipation caused by medication for the cough. I am at my wits end and will see a pulmonologist in 2 weeks. By the way there is no asthma. Any thoughts as to what could be my problem? If all else fails, I will go to a hypmotist! I am a 65 year old otherwise healthy female.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

GERD is gastroesophageal reflux disease might have caused permanent changes in throat causing coughing to slightest of irritation to anything like dust, work in kitchen and so on. The best Specialist to visit is an ENT Surgeon that can do endoscopy for larynx and pharynx to know the cause.

Surely a second opinion of a Pulmonologist along with PFT that is pulmonary function test will help a lot. A course of oral steroids may help to suppress any allergies and worth considering if you are not a diabetic. Rest of the treatment will be after evaluation by a specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
