I m not sure how to state this problem other than to be very quick to the point... if a person deficates in the bed, while asleep, and wakes to find the mess... this person does not drink, do illegal drugs. It only happens every so often and totally unexpected - but the mystery is that the person is sound asleep and had to wake up to know. Please help
* There are rare neurologic disorders in which the person has loss of control over the anus and urinary sphincters during various phases of REM and non REM sleep cycles.
* The root cause requires detailed history, physical examination with neurologic work up.

What Causes Defecation During Sleep?
Hello, The causes are like irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease or fecal incontinence due to spinal cord compression or peripheral neuropathy or infection or proctitis etc. Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Please consult your physician/neuro-physician and get it done MRI spine or urine examination is done.
