Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have protein c deficiency ,and I have my I.N.R. checked regularly . I ve found a lot of information on the Protein C deficiency , but I can t find anything on I.N.R.. My knowledge is limited to, the basic understanding that it represents the amount of clotting agent in the blood. Would you be able to tell me how to find out more about INR ?
Protein 'C' is a vitamin K-dependent natural anticoagulant produced in the liver that controls the physiologic coagulation response to injury. Its deficiency either congenital or acquired leads to increased risk for thrombosis (clot formation in the blood vessels) and hence heart disease or stroke can occur.
To prevent the clot formation (caused by the deficiency of Protein C), oral anticoagulant ('blood thinner') like Warfarin is prescribed. One of the important side effects of Warfarin is bleeding which usually occurs due to its high dose. Therefore to check the efficacy and to prevent the bleeding a lab test INR (International normalized ratio) is routinely done.
Your INR number should be between 2 and 3 if you are taking a blood thinner like Warfarin. A high INR ratio is related to increased risk of bleeding hence should be avoided.
Hope I could explain the importance of measuring INR while taking Warfarin in the treatment of Protein C deficiency.
A feed back is highly appreciated.

What Causes Deficiency In Protein C?
