What Causes Delay In Menstruation After An Emergency Appendectomy?

Hi, my last period began Dec. 1. I was due the 28th. On Dec 9th I had an emergency appendectomy. My period is now late 8 days late. We used condoms every time we had sex. I am 37 years old. I had some cramping about 4 days ago and I took a pregnancy test and it was negative. Is this normal, to be this late?
