I had my thyroid removed 8 years ago I have struggled with my levels but seem to be ok now. I am a week late with my period I have gotten a positive, a negative and test again result on home pregnancy tests. So I went to my doctor and she did a blood test and it came out negative. A few days after that I had my levels checked and was told I have hyperthyroidism and they are reducing my meds. I still have not had my period but I feel like I did when I was pregnant before. Could the blood test be wrong? They want me to take meds to start my period but I am worried that I am pregnant. I have never been late for my period except when I was pregnant. Any advise.
Hello, Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. In the current scenario, the best way to confirm/exclude pregnancy is to go for a trans-vaginal sonogram. Since the estimation of the serum beta-hCG titres is very specific and also sensitive, your chances of pregnancy are minimal with a negative test. Hormone imbalance can cause abnormal menstrual patterns. You can ask for a repeat blood test after a couple of days and if the titres are doubled, it is positive for a progressing pregnancy, even if the titres are on the lower side. Hope you find this information useful. Take care.
