What Causes Descent Of Fetal Head During Pregnancy?
my baby is due january 27 2011 and my doctor told me that he was going to do i c section yesterday but he didnt he said i had dialated 1 finger tip i never heard of that phrase before he also told me that my baby head was down but he pushed it back up what i want to kno is.....is this safe and is it possible
The baby during delivery starts coming down through the pelvic canal. Thus the head of the baby which before this was felt from the abdomen freely is not felt partially or completely due to its entry in the bony pelvic canal. This is referred to as 'Head going down'. During first pregnancy, head goes down or gets engaged much before the labour starts. It is a favourable sign denoting that the baby can mostly pass through the natural delivery canal.
The mouth of the uterus is called as cervix. Throughout the pregnancy, it is closed. As the delivery process starts, it starts opening. The extent of opening of cervix is expressed in terms to fingers where 1 finger refers to 2 cms dilatation or opening. The cervix has to open 10 cms for passage of the head of the baby. So your cervix is 2 cms dilated.
Probably your Obstetrician had a doubt about the size of your pelvis due to non decent of the head; hence he/she had planned caesarean section on you. However, now since the head has started going down and the cervix has started opening, he/she sees some chance of natural vaginal delivery. Therefore the decision of Caesarean section has been postponed. These are favourable signs for natural delivery.
I hope your confusion is resolved now.
