Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I finished chemo therapy for triple negative breast cancer in December. With taxol I had diarrhea, 4-6 episodes a day. That slowly decreased after about a month post chemo. The symptoms disappeared until 6 weeks ago. I now have diarrhea at least once a week with 4-6 episodes during that day. Is this still likely the chemo working out of me or something else. Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Taxol or any chemotherapy agent can cause diarrhea as its reaction of the gastrointestinal tract. It is good that the diarrhea settled well after completion of the course. But the recurrent attack of diarrhea once in a week is definitely worrisome and it is better to be investigated as follows: Get the stool tests done when there is diarrhea. Get the blood tested for CBC, thyroid and liver function. If there is an evidence of infection, a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole can help a lot. Take probiotics. Watch for the foods and beverages that cause such problems and stop these altogether.Take plenty of fluids and maintain hydration and electrolyte balance.
