Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had about 1 to 2 loose stools about every other day. This is after having a regular stool earlier in the day. I have taken imodium after the loose stools but am concerned that I may take too many by taking it every other day. I never take more than 4 in one day, usually less than that. Is it safe to take the medication 2 or 3 times a week? This has been going on for about 2 weeks.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. Imodium is specifically taken for loose stools which is not controlled by routine medications and when the loose stools are causing dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It should not be take at all without consulting a Doctor. Since you have only few loose stools a day get the stools checked and if there is any infection then a course of an antibiotic, metronidazole and probiotics will cure your problems. If this does not help, then you need further evaluation, examination and investigations such as colonoscopy, CT scan , tests of blood and so on to know the exact diagnosis. If all the tests are normal then you are most probably suffering from IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome. Also watch for the foods and beverages including water source and stop all the instigating or enhancing things including control of stress and anxiety.
