Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had a colectomy with small bowel resection and have had diarrhea every day since, several times a day. I understand that, however in the past week the consistency of the stool has changed and it is very frothy. I have also had a gradual increase in abdominal discomfort. Should I be concerned? And what could the potential cause be?
Dear- after a colectomy you can have diarrhea due to problems with the absorption of the food in the intestine, specially after a small bowel resection. It is important to tell your doctor about this situation, in order to make sure that everything is working fine with your colostomy. The abdominal discomfort could be gas formation from the digestion, which is part of the absorption problem too. Avoid to eat with vegetables as broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce because that increased the gas. Avoid carbonated drink too. I hope that my advise has been helpful Dr.Sara
