What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing Food?

My mother is 83 yrs old. During the last two months she has experienced a swallowing problem, which now has increased. A radiologist has told that she has a growth in her food pipe. My mother thinks that she has had phlame and it causes the problem. She is living in Sri Lanka. I do pray that it is something else other than a malignant growth. Can you pl give your opinion.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Most common causes for difficulty in swallowing are:
1) Epiglottitis
2) Tonsillitis
3) GERD
4) Any growth in the esophagus
5) Goiter or any other thyroid nodule.

In your case, she is already diagnosed as growth in esophagus. So, I will suggest you to do Endoscopic biopsy of that growth after surgeon opinion.

Follow up with surgeon with cytology report. Then, treatment will depend on diagnosis or review here with detailed history and reports. I will suggest you to do all these things as soon as possible which help her in long term.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
