Hi, I am a 62 yr. old female, 120 lbs., diagnosed previously & prone to Diverticulitis attacks...wondering if I am not actually digesting food properly...possibly not breaking down the meals properly in an appropriate time frame....I go 3 to 5 days in between bowel movements...which are usually difficult and very painful at first...then diarrhea after... this week I took Miralax (which I rarely take) to get things moving....I went Mon. after 5 days...then nothing since....even with Miralax each morning....and I don t eat large meals very often, and I do eat fairly healthy meals. It is affecting my life to a degree that I don t feel like I can leave the house. Please advise....I am uncomfortable & trying to go today, with no luck so far....
Diverticuloum is a abnormal outward projection of mucosa of colon.
When it is get infected,it is known as diverticulitis. You might have repeated infection of this leading to indigestion or may be diarrhea etc.
You should take antibiotics ( quinolones or cephalosporins) with antiprotozoals like metronidazole, antispasmodics, probiotics and other supportive treatment with dietary restrictions to low fat and high protein.
But the main cure is the only surgical removal of diverticulam because of repeated gut infection or they could be also chances of complications like peritonitis or acute bowel obstruction etc.
So,better you consult gastrosurgeon and take advise who will do complete medical examination and some relevant investigations.
