Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
YYYY@YYYY My 96 year old mother has had edema and cellulitis in her legs for 3 or 4 weeks and was given Lasix. The edema has cleared up, but about 10 days ago she began falling and fell 7 times in 8 days. I notice that one side effect of the drug is dizziness. My mother also has a UTI. The NP has also told me that my mother is dehydrated and she is concerned about her kidneys failing. I m wondering if the Lasix was over prescribed.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Lasix is a diuretic used for hypertension and edema. Patients commonly use it for long periods months or years deppending from the health condition. Every patient has the risk of dehydration or having electrolyte imbalance while using lasix. Taking lasix (furosemid) for a period 3-4 weeks, usually doesn't lead to overdosis if prescribed in normal dosage. In my opinion it isn't over prescribed, the complaints are more side effects of lasix.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
