What Causes Dizziness While On Amlodipine And Levothyroxine?

I am a healthy female, age 81 years. I have been taking 5mg. daily of Lexapro for more than a year for mild depression. Recently, I have noticed increasing drowsiness. For more than 6 months, I often have had difficulty falling asleep. This afternoon, it occurred to me that one of my 4 meds may have something to do with these symptoms. I also take each am, Losartan 50mg, amlodipine 2.5mg, escitalopram oxalate 5mg. Upon arising, I take levothyroxine sodium 50 mcg.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you've been having some problems with sleep and drowsiness. Of the medications you are taking, the most likely to be causing these problems is the Lexapro.

Insomnia and drowsiness are both known side effects of this medication. Sometimes there are multiple causes for these symptoms, and you should get evaluated by your doctor for any other diseases like thyroid disease.

But I think it would be reasonable to try stopping the Lexapro or switch to another antidepressant to see if this helps improve your symptoms.

Lexapro should be stopped under your doctor's supervision since it should be gradually decreased before stopping.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
