Should I be worried when my upper blood pressure number is 153 and the lower number 72? I take 10 mg. daily of amlodipine for high blood pressure and experienced dizziness to the point of almost passing out at church this morning. I am laying down mostly now as I feel very dizzy when I get up.
Your symptoms seem to be related to orthostatic hypotension. The fact that your blood pressure seems to be normal, and you feel better while laying down is an indicator of this disorders.
I recommend to measure your blood pressure during sitting and standing up position. If there is a decrease in your systolic blood pressure more than 20mm Hg when standing up, comparing to sitting position, this would raise the suspicion for orthostatic hypotension.
A head up tilt test would be necessary to confirm this diagnosis.
You should discuss with your doctor on the above possibility and the possible cause of this disorder, taking into consideration that amlodipine could also be the cause ( it causes vasodilation).
Further lab test should be performed to exclude other causes.
Hope to have been of help!
Best regards, Dr. Aida
