Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
When your husband experiences double vision or diplopia, we have to first confirm if it is monocular i.e. double vision noticed when in one eye is open or binocular i.e. double vision noticed when both the eyes are simultaneously open. Monocular diplopia generally develops due to a structural defect in one eye mostly after trauma or surgery and is usually picked up on a routine eye exam. Binocular diplopia will need a more detailed evaluation as it is usually a disorder affecting ocular motility. Also we need to ascertain if the double vision is constant or variable over time. A constant diplopia could be most commonly due to a transient nerve palsy which occurs in diabetics while a variable diplopia needs to be investigated for conditions like myasthenia gravis.
