Hi there,
This sounds like
interstitial cystitis, which is a condition in which the bladder is inflamed, and it feels like a
urinary tract infection, but there actually is no infection. The symptoms you have (burning) and the fact that the urine culture is coming back normal means that you don't have an infection. Your doctor is correct that antibiotics aren't going to help.
No one knows what causes Interstitial cystitis, but it is due to inflammation that isn't caused by infection, so likely an autoimmune problem. Thankfully, besides the discomfort, it doesn't cause any serious problems with long term consequences. I usually recommend my patients try
ibuprofen, and this will often help with the inflammation in addition to the pain. If you don't have any
kidney or stomach problems, then you can take about 800mg every 8 hours safely. I'd try this for about 3-5 days and see if it helps.
If you still continue to have problems, the next step would be to see a
urologist and see what their recommendations are for treatment.
I hope I have answered your questions. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or if you feel I haven't addressed your question adequately.
