Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Ciprodex ear drops contains an antibiotic and a steroid. Side effects of Ciprodex include ear pain and ear itching. I assume that after 10-15 minutes the medicine is no longer in contact with nerve endings (pain) inside the ear. There is a tube-like connection between the inside of the ear and the back of the throat. When you put the drops into your son's ear, some of the liquid enters the tube and gets into the throat. Since your son is having a painful, known side effect of this medication, it will be best to contact the doctor who prescribed the medication and allow him/her to determine what should be done.
I hope this has been helpful to you and your son is well soon. Please return if you have more questions for us.
