What Causes Ear Pain With Dizziness And Diminished Hearing?
I am 60 years old 5 4 129 lbs and in good health. Over the last 6 months I have had 3 head colds which cleared on their own. Since the colds I have had pain in my left ear especially when out in the wind. I went to the ENT and had wax removed in April. In May I started having pain in my ear again, extreme dizziness and fullness with diminished hearing. Saw ENT again he didn t see anything so gave me Neo/Poly/HC 1% OTIC. That didn t help so went back to ENT again. This time he gave me a Z-pac which helped some but not complely so he gave me a second one and then a third z-pac. I have just finished taking the last pill on Tuesday evening but now the pressure is coming back, diminished hearing, dizziness and sometimes I hear my heartbeat in my left ear. The drops help with the heartbeat sound. I am wondering what I should consider doing next. Do I go back to the ENT or do you have other suggestions. I have never had any ear problems like this in my entire life.
Noted your history well and understood the concerns. Head colds cause nasal congestion, sinusitis, post nasal drip and thus affects the Eustachian tunes that transfer the inflammation to the middle causing all the problems like diminished hearing. This further causes the inflammation to affect the inner ear structures causing dizziness, tinnitus and so on. Hence I would suggest you to have additional treatment you are already taking after discussing with your ENT Surgeon or take a second opinion of another ENT Surgeon. You need a short course of an oral steroids in tapering dosages. Add on strong anti-inflammatory medication. Bed rest. Steam inhalations. Avoid too hot and too cold atmosphere and also sudden changes in room temperature. Also go for investigations of blood and CT scan of mastoids as well as Sinuses and go ahead with further management as per the findings.
I hope this answer helps you. Let me know if I can assist you further.
