my last period was 20 days ago and I took an ovulation test and it showed that I ovulated 8 days ago and today when I went to the bathroom I had a brown/red spotting when I whipped and I have had light cramps on and off today .. my period is not due for another 7 days could I be starting my period?

To clarify, you can go for the assessment of the serum beta-hCG titres now. Else, this spotting could mean an early onset of your next natural period and premenstrual symptom. This can happen with transient hormone disruptions which can occur with sudden weight changes, stress, infections etc. A sonogram of the pelvis after another week could give more information.
