What Causes Early Periods With Dark And Sludgy Blood?

i always have regular 28 day cycles, avg 4 days. this month i got it 5 days early, which has never happened in the 20 years ive had my period. it was light at first..then turned normal for 2 days and stopped for a 1/2 day. then, it came back dark and sludgey. what can this be?
