Edema of the ankle with redness on one side is most likely due to inflammation, which could be due to infection or gout. Aspiration sample of the swollen joint will reveal the cause. The possible causes : 1. Gout. 2. Septic arthritis. 3. Autoimmune arthritis. The most common cause of anemia in the elderly is gastrointestinal bleeding so occult blood in the stool should examine.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mahmoud Abouibrahim
