What Causes Edema In The Stomach During Pregnancy?

I am 33 weeks and 5 days pregnant with twins. I have edema under my belly that is pitty...why would this occur? Most of my belly is numb, but that area with the fluid is very tender. I was told that "it's because your belly is sooo big"!
