Hello, my father is 57 and just recieved the results to his psa which were 5.0. He was referred to a urologist. How bad is a PSA of 5.0, and what are the chances of it being cancer?..im only 24 and have already lost my mother to cancer, im really worried and dont think i can handle going through another cancer dx. What are the survival rates for prostate CA??

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

First of all, why did your father undergo a PSA test? If it was part of a screening (and your father does not have any lower urinary tract symptoms), it is difficult to say anything about the nature of this PSA level. 5.0 is not high, and it may fluctuate as a result of benign prostate enlargement, urinary tract infections, etc. In many countries, PSA screening is not performed, because we know that there are too many false positives, i.e. cases where the PSA is elevated, but there is no disease. Hope this helps.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
