Hi,I am Dr. Robert Galamaga (Hematologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can you tell me more about an elevated red blood cell along with elevated bilirubin levels ... in addition, I have been anemic for many years? Would these symptoms point to liver disease? I do not drink alcohol ... it has been at least 5 years since a drink and, even then, I did not drink alot in my life. Thanks for any responses.
Hi, Thanks for asking. Based on your query, my opinion is as follows. 1. If you are having an elevated RBC count with anemia, it is possibly microcytic hypochromic anemia. Serum ferritin levels and total iron binding capacity needs to evaluated to identify possible iron deficiency or thalassemia. 2. Bilirubin needs to be classified into conjugated or unconjugated. If it is more unconjugated, it is possibly hemolytic anemia like thalassemia. If it is more conjugated liver cause will require evaluation. 3. If conjugated bilirubin is rising, get an ultrasound abdomen to identify the cause. Liver biopsy may be necessary. More details of anemia and bilirubin necessary for further opinion. Hope it helps. Any further queries, happy to help again.
