What Causes Elevated WBC Count Post Spleen Removal?
My brother had undergone pancreatic spleen surgery, spleen has been removed (NET), everything normal otherwise except that recently an increase in wbc count lead to tests that shows anisopolikocytosis, there was wbc increase with normalocytes and normalochonicho rbc with ovalocites, can you guideplease, he has been advised acourse of two antibiotics, for ten days please give your views sir.
Hello... You did not mention that why spleen has been removed along with pancreas. Post splenectomy patient may get infected with Pneumococcus and Meningococcus infection very oftenly. This infection can cause increase in TLC count in Hemogram. In tis case you have to treat the infection with proper antibiotics course. You did not mention regarding antibiotics details. But according to guideline, after splenectomy if TLC rises then should start those antibiotics which are sensitive to Pneumococcal and Meningococcal. So in my opinion you have to start Inj Ampicillin 2 gm 6hrly for 7 days. after that patient should be vaccinated with Pneumococcal and Meningoccal vaccines.
Thank You
