What Causes Elevated Heart Beat?

I'm sick and while I'm laying down, occasionally I feel like my heart is beating extra hard so that it shakes my body slightly. If I try to palpate different areas of my chest, neck or back, you can feel my chest bounce a bit from the heart beat. I am 51 y/o, female 118lbs and have illness induced asthma.
