Hello, I just got test results from my Doctor and she is concerned about my SGOT and SGTP values. I do drink one to two glassed of red wine with my dinner and for about eight years I have takes two ADVIL PM to get to sleep and stay asleep at night. Are one to two glasses of red wine, with dinner the cause of my elevated liver enzymes? I am 67 years old and in good health.

Hi, Thanks for your question.

Advil PM although not reported to cause any liver damage but still it is not something that you can take everyday. It's an NSAID, which has its side effects particularly it can cause kidney damage with prolonged use. So, I would recommend to stop taking it regularly.

One glass of red wine daily is also not reported to cause liver damage but alcohol in general can damage liver hence, yes, you need to avoid that too for now.

Its not clear enough from your history that how exactly did you get liver damage. You might have got a hepatitis virus or sometimes even fatty liver can raise those enzymes. Or, that one or two glasses of wine may just be too much for you. In any case, you need some lab work up. The raised enzymes need to get investigated. You should get a liver ultrasound and Hepatitis viral panel done.

I hope I guided you. Feel free to contact me any time.
Regards and stay healthy.

Hi,

Thanks for your question on HCM

I do understand your pain and discomforts

As per your question let me clarify your doubts step wise-:

1)you are worried about elevated your SGOT and SGPT level, It happens due to Inflammation or injured in liver cells only which leaks higher than normal amounts of certain chemicals, including liver enzymes, into the bloodstream, which can result in elevated liver enzymes on blood tests, so first of all we have to point out the cause behind it and what symptoms or signs you have right now.

2)please check whether you have following symptoms or not-

(a)fatigue

(b)bleeding easily

(c)itchy skin

(d)yellow discoloration of skin

(e)fluid accumulation in your abdomen

(f)loss of appetite

(g)nausea

(h)swelling in your legs

(i)weight loss

(j)confusion, drowsiness and slurred speech

(k)spider-like blood vessels on your skin

Please check if you have anyone sign present or not.

3)You have asked about 2 glass of wine every day for 8 years can damage your liver or not and in my own opinion i may say it depends upon person to person so now it is time to reduce it as you know alcohol is bad for health.

4)You can do few things at home to protect your liver in a natural way as below-:

(a)Grind some fresh papaya seeds to extract 1 tablespoon of juice. Add 10 drops of lemon juice. Drink it once or twice daily for 1 month.

(b)Green tea is loaded with antioxidants that reduce oxidation stress, which initiates cirrhosis of tissues. Plus, it has a protective effect against liver disease and has antiviral properties that help fight viral hepatitis. Add 1 teaspoon of green tea powder to 1 cup of hot water. Allow it to steep for 5 minutes. Strain it. Sweeten with a little raw honey. Drink this tea 3 times a day on a regular basis.

Hope that helps
