What Causes Entire Leg Turning Purple When Having Severe Back Pain?

My daughter who is away at college just phoned from the E.R. to let me know that her entire leg had turned purple and she was in pain. We're both waiting on the results of her blood work. She said she had been suffering from a bad back ache for the last 3 days too. Any ideas what this could be?

Hello,
The leg turning purple is likely from a lack of blood flow to the leg or some sort of bruising. It is hard to know if this is related to the back pain or not. She may eventually need an ultrasound or some other imaging to determine the cause. It is very good that she is in the ER. That is the best place to sort this out.
