Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Episodes Of Sadness And Loss Of Memory?
I am 61 and for the last 30 yrs I have had recurring instantaneous mental spells in which I experience a strong sense of reliving a memory (a different memory each time) followed by a strong mental euphoria followed by a deep sense of sadness combined with a sick feeling in my stomach like I may vomit, but i never have. The whole episode takes maybe 5 seconds and it is like a computer crashing and it takes about another 30 seconds to totally recover. I do not loose consciousness and have had one when driving (able to keep driving safely but a little disoriented) a few times when talking (disoriented and not able to remember the topic) and 3 times running ( had to stop for a minute or two to get reoriented) but most often it is just when I am going about life (recently had a couple in the shower in the morning, and they seem to happen before midday) They started in 1982 following the suicide death of my dad and peaked during a nine year work assignment away from my family. At that time there were days that I would have as many as 6 spells in one day. I have gone many months without a spell and recently they are sporadic and I may average one a month. So the spells could be stress related. I am being treated for depression and have taken Zoloft or pristiq for 20 yrs. currently I take 100mg of pristiq but that helps but has been less effective in the last year or so and I intend to talk to my doc about trying something new. In the last year or so I also have been dealing with increased long term and short memory loss. A MRI from a few years ago show small 'white spots' throughout my brain that the doc says a dead cells but don't have a cause. I had one suspected TIA about 10 years ago. Any thoughts about what could be the cause of the spells and my increased memory loss and could some of the things I describe by connected. Thanks so much for your time
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. The sudden onset episodes with feeling like sense of relieving memory, euphoria lasting for few seconds can occur due to a number of conditions and detailed evaluation is needed to make proper diagnosis. In most individuals of your age first possibility is Transient Ischaemic Attacks or TIA. You have history of TIA and this could be one reason for your symptoms.
Other possibility for your symptoms is some dissociative symptom. You have history of depression and are taking medicines for them. The symptom onset occurred following death of your father so this is also one possibility. I would advise you to visit a psychiatrist for expert evaluation and treatment.
Your MRI is perfectly normal, small white spots in MRI are considered as insignificant in most cases.
Thanks, Take care
