Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What would be the cause of excessive burping (loud guttural sounding) but no other symptoms? No chest pain, or nausea. Only happens at work while sitting for long hours in an ergonomic office/desk chair. Not drinking carbonated beverages or eating excessively fast. The burping has been increasing in frequency over the last week or so. Doesn t happen outside of the workplace. There is a convulsive-like intake of air immediately before the belch happens. Can t control it.
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
Excessive burping/belching is due to too much swallowed air, with the belching releasing the air to reduce the distention of the stomach.
Foods that weaken the lower oesophageal sphincter include peppermint, chocolate, fatty meats, fried foods and caffeine. Avoid these, and you'll be less likely to burp. Avoid habitually sipping fluids during meals. Prokinetic medication such as,domperidon(10-20 mg 8hrly) are generally used,if bloating & belching is troublesome. Dietary exclusion of gas-producing foods such as legumes and use of simethicone or activated charcoal provide benefits in some cases.
