What Causes Excessive Cough Post Pneumonia?

I have coughing and breathing issues after I take a sip of liquid. I just had an episode that lasted about 15-20 minutes. My wife helped by pounding on my back, I could not breathe and turned a very dark purple, eyes became glazed. I was able to cough up clear mucus but it lasted so long that my wife wanted to call 911. Could I have problems with the flap(value) not getting the right signals when I swallow. This has happened three times in the last 4 weeks, following an episode of pneumonia.

Hi, it seems you suffered with acute aspiration of liquid you frank which causes violent cough which is actually protective by spitting out the liquid you aspirated.
post pneumonia if it involves lung cover causing pleuritis may cause irritant cough. I suggest you that if it recurrs you need evaluation further. Check with ENT specialist for video Laryngoscopic exam. Take care
