What Causes Fast Breathing Issues In New Borns?

is it ok for newborn babies to breath faster than normal and then normally sometimes.
I have a new born newphew and observed yesterday that he breaths fasts sometimes (for a few seconds)
then his breathing pattern goes back to normal. He is about 3 weeks and some days old.

Hello. I just read through your question. The average respiratory rate for a newborn is 40 breaths per minute. Often the newborns will display something called "periodic breathing". This is a pattern of increased respiratory rate for a few seconds followed by a slow down and then a return to regular rate. This can sometimes be accompanied by a gasp for air at some point during this pattern. This is normal. As long as the baby is otherwise comfortable, there is no need for consern.
