What Causes Fast Heart Rate While Having An Asthma Attack?

My son is 16. And we are up here at a children's hospital as he had an asthma attack and his pulse rate went crazy. At one point his oxygen sat was 64, then 76 then went back up to low 90s. His pulse rate went to over 100 while lying down...at some points it went to 142, 174' and at the hospital it has mostly been in the 120s. Why does the pulse rate become so erratic and spike like that?

Hello,

It might be due to drugs used for asthma.

Bronchodilators like salbutamol might cause rapid heart rate.

Consult a cardiologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
