What Causes Fatigue And Difficulty Sitting, Standing, Or Eating In An Elderly Person?

My mother in law, Age 74 who is always looking tired. She is not able to sit, stand & walk for past 1 month. She is not able to take normal food & drink. But she has no body pain. She already had treatment from Dr. T. Arvindraj MD at Kanagamani Hospital, Ramnad, Tamilnadu 10 years back. He told her to take NICARDIA RETARD 10 MG TABLET everyday once after breakfast due to block in heart. He also told that she might have heart attack thrice. But she had no such feelings. After 2 years she visited at CSI Hospital, Manamadurai, Tamilnadu. Their doctor tested her and reported that there is no block in her heart, But they also advised to take NICARDIA RETARD 10 MG TABLET everyday once after breakfast. Kindly advise experts.

Hi,

Nicardia-R is used to treat high blood pressure and also used for angina. Angina refers to chest pain that occurs when the heart does not get enough blood through the vessels in it. Typically a person would complain of chest pain on activity. This may occur with shortness of breath (breathing fast) and heart beating quickly. If she has high blood pressure, this may be reason for the medication. In terms of her fatigue, this may also be related to the heart eg heart failure.

Other causes would be anemia (low blood count) or low levels of thyroid hormones. She may need blood tests for this as well as testing to see if heart failure is present if she has any of the other heart failure symptoms (swelling of the feet), fluid build up in the abdomen, shortness of breath, cough- worse at night, needing to prop up on pillows to sleep, waking up short of breath

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson, General & Family Physician
