What Causes Fatigue While On Birth Control Pills And Levothyroxine?
I’m a 44 year old on Levothyroxine after total thyroidectomy 15 years ago. I took birth control pills for the last two months with thyroid and may have disrupted absorption. Since then I have had extreme fatigue, brain fog and chest and neck pressure, high blood pressure and heart palpitations. Symptoms most pronounced during exercise and stress tests. Now I’ve been inactive with constant chest pressure for three weeks. I’m off the BCP now for two weeks and fatigue has slightly improved (thyroid takes time to build up) but heart/BP symptoms are still present. Full heart/lung work up reveal no heart or lung obstruction. BP surges to 150/100 at times with palpitations sometimes. My normal BP was 107/76 before all of this and I exercised 4-5 times a week. I take Metroprolol now 2x daily and an aspirin. What is going on?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You need to check the thyroid hormones (TSH,Ft4 and Ft3) to be sure that the dose of levothyroxine is right because the symptoms you reported are suggestive for over active thyroid. The contraceptive pills may interact with levothyroxine absorption and cause hormonal imbalance.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
