What Causes Fatigue, irritability And Constant Craving For Food?

Dear Doctor, Hello, my name is Blake, and I am an eighteen year old male (almost nineteen years of age). I am supposed to visit with a doctor next month, but I thought that I would go ahead and get another opinion. My health-related question is that I am frequently tired, fatigued, irritable, and have a constant craving for food. I have researched these symptoms online, but especially due to my age range, I have found no definite answer. To me, it feels like in order to get relief, I either have to sleep often or eat something often. Also, I notice that I am irritable and will often become angry with my mom. I hate starting arguments, but it almost feels like I have no control over my temper. Sometimes, dizziness also accompanies these symptoms. Any advice or suggestions as to what it might be? I would really appreciate a response. My e-mail address is: YYYY@YYYY . Thanks, Blake

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,

Your Tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, sleepenessand food craving can be symptoms of Hypothyroidism.
At the other side, irritability and losing control over your temper can be related to the opposite thyroid condition called hyperthyroidism.

Specifically, food craving (only this specific symptom) can be caused by an imbalance of hormones, such as leptin and serotonin. (leptin is the hormone that helps regulate appetite by signalling hunger satisfaction.)

If you were my patent, I will first ask you to do the thyroid tests (TSH, ft3, fT4) and the leptin level if you are obese.

These tests will give a lot of information and will help to clarify what it may be that cause all your symptoms. Only if we find the root cause, you can have the right treatment.

My advice for you, in your circumstances, try to manage stress and anxiety, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Elona Xhardo, Endocrinologist
