What Causes Fluid Drainage From The Ears And Nasal Congestion While Having Sinusitis?

I seem to be ending 2 weeks of the flu. Other than a cough that is receding, the symptoms are all above the neck.. My problem: sinuses are clogged. Must blow nose every 15 a 20 minutes, lots of thick yellow coming out. No matter how gently I blow my left ear makes noises, even squeaks, and the past 3 nights I lots of wet discharge comes out of ear. Also was leaking during the day. I have a cotton ball to help keep it from leaking. Am I hurting my ear by continuing to blow nose? Is this serious? Difficult to hear out of ear. I have nasal spray (app-mometasone) prescribed by Doctor. She doesn t worried about my ear but I am! Your thoughts please.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like due to cold there is sinus infection and also it looks like there is blocked Eustachian tube due to fluid accumulation..
So my suggestion is to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopy of the ear and sinus x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics like Augmentin and decongestant like Phenylephrine.
Use decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline..
Do steam inhalations with saline nasal irrigation.
Use a humidifier in your room..

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
