What Causes Fluttering Chest And Fatigue With Family History Of Arrhythmia?

Hi, My grandma as well as my dad has arrythmia. I am 35 years old. My gallbladder was removed last year. I had an EKG when I was 20, but nothing was wrong. Yesterday morning at 9:00 I drank a Red Bull energy drink. I ve been on diet pills for about 2 weeks. Last night it felt extremely tired. It felt as if a bird was fluttering in my chest. I had a numb pain in my left arm. Could it be a cafein overdose? (red bull +diet pills) or is arrythmia hereditary. I didnt use any alcohol yesterday, although I occasionally use a glass of red wine or two. Thank you!

Hello and thank you for using HCM.

I carefully read your question and I understand your concern.
I will try to give you my opinion about the related issue.

Probably, this fluttering sensation in your chest is related with heart rhythm.
It might be a simple tachycardia, meaning that your heart beats more then 100 beats for minute. Or, it might be an extra-sistolik beat. This is an electrical impulse that generates before the usual sinus rhythm.

Both of this rhythm problems might have different causes. Caffeine overdose and energy drinks might be the cause and they allays exacerbate this symptoms.
Rhythm problems may be related to anemia, hyperthyroidism or simply stress. In some cases they might be hereditary.

So, if i was your treating doctor, i will advise you to stop caffeine products, excessive alcohol and energy drinks and do a simple blood analyze for what i mention before.
After that a simple electrocardiogram, a cardiac echo and a holter rhythm monitoring to see your rhythm tendency.

Hope I was helpful,
Best regards, Dr Ervina
