What Causes Frequent Urination And Urge To Urinate?

Hello, I am an eighteen year old currently in college. About a month or so ago, I started developing uncomfortable symptoms. These included frequent urination especially at night when trying to sleep, and for about 4 days I always felt like urinating even when I had just used the bathroom. A new symptom is in development, and my small finger as well as that part of my palm is slightly numb. This sometimes happens when I wake but the numbness completely fades after a few minutes. This one is slight, and has lasted a few days. There is also periodic muscle spasms and tingling when I sit in place. I know you cannot make a diagnosis but I would appreciate any shared thoughts, as I am thinking of withdrawing from the semester if this could be anything serious; I would hate to worry my family unless I have some good evidence pointing towards disaster.

Hi.

Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem, and I am pleased to answer your query.

First, let me analyze your urinary symptoms. Frequent urination indicates that you have infection in your urinary tract. This is true especially if you have pain/discomfort during urination. This is fairly a common condition, and is curable with a course of suitable antibiotics.

Secondly, your symptoms of numbness of inner aspect of your palm/muscle spasms/tingling -have several causes. But numbness that occurs during sleep, and that goes off on waking up- is commonly due to improper positioning of your arm during sleep. i.e. placing your arm under your head so that it causes slight compression of particular nerve(s) causing numbness. This will go off if you modify your posture, if possible.

But this may also indicate involvement of your nerves due to diabetes, in which urinary infections also are common. So here are my suggestions for you:

1. Take plenty of water. This will help flush your urinary tract of any germs.
2. Consult your physician. You may need urine tests, including culture test, and some blood tests to detect diabetes. A neurological consultation may be needed.
3. Your concern about your own health is appreciable. At the same time, I don't think this is serious enough for you to withdraw from your semester. Please do not try to come to any conclusion before consulting your physician. You can very well concentrate in your studies.

Hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to post further queries if any. I will be glad to answer. If you are satisfied with my answer, please do give your feed back. All the very best for your studies.
